Eight students at Sandpoint High School have taken on a very prestigous project. They are converting a 1929 Mercedes into a fully electric, zero emissions vehicle. This project has been named by team members, '29 MEC, or 1929 Mercedes Electric Conversion. Sandpoint High School is located in Sandpoint, Idaho. This project is the newest on the growing list of incredible achievments that Engineering instructor Gary Quinn has started. This list comprises of six electric, one person electrathon race cars and a new robotics program. The 1929 Mercedes was donated to the Enginnering department by Bud Moon.

April 2, 1999 - May 25, 1999

The front battery box has been installed and has been wired. The carpet in the interior has been laid and is in the final stages of being attached to the frame. The wiring is nearly complete. The rear battery box is ready to be installed and will be shortly. We procured some diamond plate for the steps and they have been installed. The motor and transmission have been hung and are ready to go. The shifter has been installed. The seats are ready for installation when thethe carpeting is completed. The tail lights and turnsignals have been installed. We are in the final stages now. The vehicle should be rolling by June 1, 1999.

Feburary 2, 1999 - April 1, 1999

Well the 29 MEC team has been out of touch for awhile. The individual that updates the web page became ill and it has taken a long time for him to get better. The photo gallery has been updated and split into two sections so the pictures will download faster. The body has been painted and pictures of it will be uploaded as soon as it is assembled. Final modifications to the frame are underway and expected to be complete next week. The electrical team is working on constructing the boxes that will contain the batteries and elecrical components.

January 11, 1999 - Feburary 1, 1999

The body of the vehicle has been sanded and is ready for paint. The motor/controller, and all neccessary electrical components have been ordered. The carpet for the interior has been ordered along with all the velor for the seats.

November 21, 1998 - January 10, 1999

We apologize, the 29 mec team has been out of touch due the holidays. The Frame has been completely sanded and is ready for a coat of paint. The front of the frame has been modified and reinforceing memebers have been welded into place to support the battery box. Pat and Dan are pulling together a list of electrical components and moving into the final stage of building the battery box. They have decided on using 12 optima yellow top batteries. Charles has completely sanded the body and the fenders. The primary has been applied and the body is nearly ready to paint. The team has decided on a black body with a blue lightning bolt running down both sides. The fenders will be midnight blue.

November 1-20

The photo gallery has been updated with some pictures of the vehicle frame in the auto shop at school. Tim Gould and Jon Yaw have begun grinding down the welds on the frame to give it a better look. Charles Wells has been sanding down the body preparing it for paint. Dan Chapman and Pat Foster have constructed a mock up battery box to assist them in building the real battery box.

October 19-31

The first quarter of school is over here in Sandpoint. The entire car is at the school now. Battery research is nearing completion. The team is discussing the possibility of pursuing an additional grant to install an a/c system. A d/c system is currently slated for implementation.

October 11-18

Menard and Clark gave an excellent presentation to the School to Work Committee and the grant has been approved. If you have Corel Presentations you can download the presentation.The body has arrived at the school.

October 1-10

Two team members, Adrian Menard and Nolan Clark will be presenting along with Quinn and robotics instructor, Les Snoderly, to a school to work committee for a grant totaling the sum of $10,000. Conversion of the vehicle is scheduled to begin in December.
